How do I start swimming?

I am sedentary and have virtually no muscle, zero fitness. But I’m skinny and eat healthy. I want to take up swimming because I want to start exercising and it’s the only physical activity I enjoy. I want to build fitness without spasming my muscles esp. since I have bad posture and back problems. How long should I swim and how often, and how do I know when to increase my effort and when I’m straining myself and need to take it slow? I’m female, 21, 5′7, 115 pounds, extremely unfit. Also, during swimming whenever I feel like my muscles are dying and can’t take it anymore, is it good to keep going or should I take a rest? Because it feels like my body really needs me to stop.

I would start off by using a kick board.Back stroke is an easier stroke and you can actually do laps at a slower pace.But first I would strengthen your legs by doing all 4 strokes with the kick board.Do 2 laps of each, free, back, breast, fly, that would make it seem less boring.Butterfly kick really moves you faster and strenghtens your muscles.You can concentrate on your upper body strength, also by doing weights.I try to swim an hour every day.I love to back stroke and the time seems to go by really fast. good luck
